Pedro Saint-Maurice, PhD
Pedro Saint-Maurice, Ph.D., joined the Champalimaud Foundation as a Principal Investigator in 2023. He earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Iowa State University in 2013, where his dissertation focused on improving physical activity questionnaires using accelerometry. Before joining Champalimaud, Dr. Saint-Maurice spent seven years at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, leading studies on physical activity and cancer epidemiology. He has also held positions as a postdoctoral researcher at Iowa State University and as a research consultant at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, where he led studies on the measurement properties of accelerometers and physical activity questionnaires.
Dr. Saint-Maurice's research focuses on leveraging wearable technologies to advance understanding of physical activity, sleep, and other lifestyle factors that influence circadian rhythms and health. His work explores how wearable data can better quantify energy expenditure, monitor sleep, and assess light exposure to understand the role of lifestyle behaviors in preventing chronic diseases and improving outcomes for adults with cancer. He currently serves as President of the International Society for Diet and Activity Methods, Associate Editor for the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and Associate Editor for the Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behavior, which publishes research on wearable technology applications in clinical and epidemiological studies.
