David Pinto, MD, PhD St is a Surgical Oncologist at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Clinical Center in Lisbon since February 2013. In 2023, he began the process of obtaining a PhD at the University of Medicine of Lisbon with a thesis on extended reality in surgical planning. He is the Principal Investigator in the "AVA XR" project – Augmented reality in DIEAP flap surgery for breast reconstruction and co-PI in the “FLOW” trial about virtual reality for anxiety control in the pre-operative setting for breast cancer patients. He is also the national coordinator of an international cooperative study: the AXSANA study (Axillary surgery in patients with positive nodes after primary systemic treatment).

His currently main research interests are in deescalation of axillary surgery and use of extended reality in surgery. He currently holds a position on the Board of the Portuguese Society of Senology since 2022 and in the Spanish and Portuguese Association of Breast Surgery since 2023. He is also a reviewer for the journals "The Breast" and "Breast Care."
